How to apply to jobs with Claude Code

Claude Code can search job sites, fill in applications and keep a record of every one. FreeApply gives it the tools and the rules to do that safely, on your own Claude plan and without sending your résumé anywhere. This guide takes you from install to your first applications.

What you need

  • Claude Code with a Claude plan that includes it. Applying uses your plan's normal usage limits; when they run out, the run stops and can pick up later.
  • Node.js 22.13 or newer (nodejs.org). Check with node --version.
  • A browser Claude Code can use, such as Claude in Chrome, signed in to the job sites you want to use. FreeApply never handles your passwords.
  • Your résumé as a PDF, DOCX, TXT or Markdown file.

Using Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code or Windsurf instead? The steps are the same after the install; see Install for your app.

Step 1: Install FreeApply

Run the installer in a terminal. It finds Claude Code (and any other supported apps), checks the package's signature, and asks before adding FreeApply to each one.

Windows (PowerShell)

irm https://www.mybotsai.com/appserver/install.ps1 | iex

macOS and Linux

curl -fsSL https://www.mybotsai.com/appserver/install.sh | bash

For Claude Code, the installer runs claude mcp add -s user freeapply … and installs FreeApply's three skills in ~/.claude/skills. Prefer to read scripts before running them? Open install.ps1 or install.sh in your browser first.

Or install it as a Claude Code plugin from the GitHub repository:

/plugin marketplace add FreeApply/freeapply
/plugin install freeapply@freeapply

Step 2: Set it up

  1. Restart Claude Code and say "Set up FreeApply". Your dashboard opens at http://127.0.0.1:7878, on your computer only.
  2. Read and accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy there yourself (you must be 18 or older). Until you do, the agent tools stay locked, and Claude can never accept for you.
  3. Fill in Settings: your résumé, name and email, desired roles, minimum pay, locations, work authorization and the job sites you use. Claude applies nowhere until these are filled in.

Setup then reads your résumé into a short profile (skills, titles, education) that later checks use. Facts about you come only from your résumé, your settings and answers you give.

Step 3: Sign in to your job sites

In the browser Claude Code uses, sign in to each job site you picked, then tick "I'm signed in" for it in Settings → Job sites. Company career pages on Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby usually need no account at all, which makes them the smoothest place to start.

Step 4: Say "find me jobs and apply"

Claude follows FreeApply's signed procedure:

  • It searches your sources for your target roles and locations, and scores each job's fit from 0 to 100.
  • Before claiming a job it checks for duplicates, so reposts and jobs you already applied to are skipped. Jobs with posted pay below your minimum are recorded as skipped.
  • It fills in the application with your real details and saved answers. Cover letters and free-text answers must pass the truthfulness check, which refuses claims your résumé doesn't back up.
  • Right before each submit, the pace check must clear, and every application is logged in the dashboard.

Anything that needs you goes to the Issues tab: questions your settings don't answer (answer once and reuse the answer later), sites that need a new account, CAPTCHAs and blocked forms. Claude moves on to the next job instead of waiting.

Step 5: Watch for replies

If Claude Code has a Gmail connector, setup also schedules a reply check, every 4 hours by default. It records acknowledgements, assessments, interviews, rejections and offers against the right job, and stars or labels those emails as you choose in Settings. You can also just ask "any replies?".

Tips for a good first run

  • Start small. Let it apply to a handful of jobs, then read what it sent in the dashboard before you set a larger daily cap.
  • Be specific in Settings. Clear target roles, a real pay floor and your locations make the fit scores sharper, which means fewer, better applications.
  • Save good answers. Answers you give on the Issues tab can be reused, so later forms need you less.
  • Mind each site's rules. Some job sites limit automated use in their terms. FreeApply works in your own signed-in session and pauses a site that signs you out or shows its own limit, but you decide which sites to use. See the Disclosures.
  • Unattended runs are possible within the time and application limits you set, once you trust what it sends.

If something doesn't work

  • "Terms not accepted" or tools refusing: open the dashboard and accept the Terms there yourself.
  • "FreeApply is locked": the signed workflow was changed or damaged. Install FreeApply again to restore the official copy.
  • A site keeps signing you out: sign in again in the browser and tick "I'm signed in"; Claude keeps going on your other sites meanwhile.
  • Nothing happens after install: restart Claude Code completely so it loads the new MCP server.
